How Does Chiropractic Work?

Due to everyday stresses associated with walking, sitting, working, and living our lives, our body’s structure becomes misaligned through tightening of the tissues or faulty movement of our skeleton.  The purpose of a chiropractic treatment is to find areas of your skeleton that are not moving properly and to restore normal movement through a spinal adjustment.  Improper spinal motion causes irritation of the underlying nerves, which control every function of your body through your brain and spinal column.  When misalignment is corrected along the spine via an adjustment, not only is your structure restored, but your body’s functioning is also improved.  This is a result of the underlying nerve irritation being relieved.  When the spine is moving properly, your brain is best able to communicate with your body, which leads to improved health in all areas of your body.  By concentrating our care on helping the brain and spinal cord carry all of their signals properly to the rest of the body, we are able to offer an alternative method of treating certain disorders.

Do Chiropractors Only Treat The Back?
No. Chiropractors most frequently treat "muscular-skeletal" complaints.  That is, we treat the spine as well as all the muscles and joints in your body.  Many people receive care for sore backs and necks, pulled muscles, ankle sprains, headaches, whiplash injuries and repetitive stress injuries like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or elbow tendonitis.  And, many people begin treatment for problems like these, but end up finding relief from other conditions such as asthma, allergies, digestive disorders, sleep disorders, and fatigue conditions because their nervous system becomes "tuned-up” as the nerve irritation is relieved.   All sessions typically include a structural spinal assessment to ensure the optimal function of their nervous system.  Please see the section on “Can Chiropractic Help Me?” for some of the more common Chiropractic complaints or call for a complimentary consultation with Dr. Dubrul.

I don’t want my back “cracked”. What is Activator Method?
Dr. Dubrul uses Activator Method, which is a gentle, low force alternative way to deliver a chiropractic adjustment to any bone/joint in the body. Activator technique utilizes a small, hand-held instrument to deliver safe and very specific movements into a joint. There is no twisting of the spine or cracking noise involved.

What’s that “popping” sound made during a chiropractic adjustment?
If your Chiropractor uses their hands to manipulate your spine, it is usually accompanied by a ‘popping’ noise.  It is not your spine making that noise, but is a release of nitrogen gas rushing in between the joints of your spine when they are partially moved during the adjustment. As much as when you open a can of soda or a jar of pickles and hear a “popping” noise, it is only a release of gas. No breaking of bones is taking place.

Do Chiropractors prescribe drugs or perform surgical procedures?
No. Chiropractors don’t prescribe drugs and do not perform surgeries.  The doctor focuses on a drug-free, non-invasive approach to restore proper function as a way of pain relief and to bring optimal health.  When necessary, Dr. Dubrul will refer to an appropriate specialist while still managing your care.
